What to know when replacing or choosing a new CNC milling spindle

Replacing a spindle may look simple, but incorrectly selected power, mass or frequency inverter settings can make the machine work worse. Before replacing a milling motor, it is worth evaluating not only kilowatts, but also mechanics, cooling and control.

When replacing a spindle with a more powerful one, must the VFD be replaced?

Usually not. If you previously used a 2.2 kW spindle and now only find a 3.5 kW model, it can often be installed without changing the frequency inverter settings. However, this does not mean that the full power of the new spindle can always be used safely.

  • The machine structure may have been calculated specifically for a 2.2 kW spindle, so higher power can negatively affect mechanical operation.
  • Higher torque will be noticeable because a more powerful spindle has a heavier and larger diameter rotor.
  • A heavier rotor can provide more stability, especially at low speeds.
  • A higher-power spindle is more massive, so it can sometimes reduce mechanical vibration, but increases the load on axes and mounts.

If the full power of the new spindle is required, the frequency inverter must be selected according to the spindle nameplate parameters and configured correctly.

What should be checked before buying?

  • Maximum speed and operating mode for the tools used.
  • Cooling type: air-cooled or water-cooled spindle.
  • Mounting dimensions, spindle weight and compatibility with the Z axis.
  • Frequency inverter current, voltage, output frequency and control method.
  • Bearing quality, vibration level and noise.

Practical advice

If you are unsure about power, evaluate the whole system: machine structure, frequency inverter, cooling, holders and the real requirement of the material being processed. More kilowatts alone do not always mean a better result.
