Most common CO2 laser problems
CO2 laser faults often do not appear suddenly. They are usually caused by improper cooling, excessive load, contaminated optics or incorrect operating conditions. Noticing symptoms in time helps avoid expensive repairs and downtime.
Power loss
One of the most common problems is decreasing laser power. It can be caused by insufficient tube cooling, the end of the tube service life or operation in conditions where allowed parameters are exceeded: temperature is too high, working power is too high or no power reserve is left.
If the laser cuts more slowly, power has to be increased or the result becomes unstable, it is worth checking cooling, optics, power supply and tube condition.
Common sources of faults
- Insufficient water flow or cooling liquid temperature that is too high.
- Contaminated mirrors or focusing lens.
- Incorrectly aligned beam path through the optical system.
- Excessive operating current, shortening CO2 tube lifetime.
- A weakening high-voltage power supply.
- Dust, moisture or poor ventilation in the electronics compartment.
What should be checked first?
First check the simple things: whether lenses and mirrors are clean, whether water circulation works, whether cooling temperature stays within the recommended limit, whether there are air bubbles in hoses and whether the beam hits the center of the optics accurately.
Only after these checks is it worth suspecting more expensive components: the CO2 tube, power supply or control electronics.
